Just Another Manic Monday….

On this Monday, I would like to give a tribute to Music….music that speaks to the relevancy of our days and helps to confirm the very thoughts of an unsettled mind. That music is “Manic Monday”….and rightfully so. If this title rings a bell with you, you’re correct in believing so. Manic Monday was recorded by “The Bangles, in 1986. The song was actually written by Prince Rogers Nelson (better known as Prince) and sent to the band to record. “Manic Monday,” describes the hustle and bustle of a 9-to-5 office job that comes to interrupt the well celebrated weekend (activities). The Lyrics of the song begins like this;

Six o’clock already
I was just in the middle of a dream
I was kissin’ Valentino
By a crystal blue Italian stream
But I can’t be late
‘Cause then I guess I just won’t get paid
These are the days
When you wish your bed was already made

It’s just another manic Monday
I wish it was Sunday
‘Cause that’s my fun day
My I don’t have to run day
It’s just another manic Monday

Now, what I would love to know is what office job, Prince may have had in mind or better yet what was his inspiration for this song? After all, by then he was an established musician/artist, with millions of fans. Well, we may never know why it is he saw fit to pen the words to this classic much less title it “Manic Monday’, but as it is let’s pause in a moment of silence, for Prince Rogers Nelson, (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016).

The word manic is “characterized by a sustained period of abnormally elevated or irritable mood, intense energy, racing thoughts, and other extreme and exaggerated behaviors“. A manic period could look like all of the above, wrapped up in the multitasking of several projects that lack serious thought and or planning. Such projects ultimately lead to a list of uncompleted tasks, busy-ness all hours of the day, and little regard for rest.

If this resembles you or someone you may know, it is definitely time for a MONDAY intervention. The following are suggestions for calming the manic Monday mind (or any day of the week): 1. Watch Your Thoughts– the very thing that you’re thinking about is often times the cause of further anxiety. We tend to exaggerate in thoughts the outcome of things to come and things that can not be changed. 2. Creating A Relaxing Space (physically/mentally) helps to create calmness in your mind. Meditation or Yoga techniques may help in this instance. 3. Finally seek Medical Care– If the manic behaviors results of a mental health condition. It is very important to seek consultation from a doctor, especially if the behavior continues over an extended period of time. My prayer is that this Monday and all week long – you are overcome with such peace and productivity, that even you are amazed. Enjoy Life, Live Proud, Live Free……. #janenotdoe
